The Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis) is one of my absolute favorite schooling fish. Found from the Indian Ocean all the way to the Western Pacific, this mind-blowing little fish normally inhabits pinnacles and the edges of reefs where upwelling occurs. When you find them you are usually surrounded by thousands swaying back and forth in the current, feeding on zooplankton as it floats by. The Lyretail Anthias is dimorphic in nature, meaning males and females differ greatly in their coloration. They are also hermaphroditic, meaning they have the ability to make a one way transition from female to male when the the opportunity arises. Some of the most amazing diving experiences I have ever had were in the presence of these swimming gems.
This 8.75" x 8.75" barnwood square is from a 120 year old white oak barn in east Tennessee which I took down myself. Each piece has been carved to bring out the defining characteristics of the fish. The barnwood is then treated organically with borax and cedar oil. The backside has been left raw and includes a eye hook for hanging.
